Yaakov Tzemach, born in Baghdad in 1930, joined the Zionist underground at the age of 15, which was founded in Iraq in 1941 following the Farhud riots. Every morning on his way to school, Jacob saw people hanged by the government, most of them Jews or communists, and without his parents’ knowledge, he secretly began to prepare himself to leave Iraq. In 1950, he immigrated to Israel, and after a four-month training period at Kibbutz Holta, he enlisted in Nahal, a unit designed to strengthen Kibbutz Bari in the Western Negev.
The kibbutz was one of the 11 points established in the Negev in 1946 using the wall and tower method In order to strengthen the demand that the Negev be included in the area of the Jews in the expected division of the land. The kibbutz is named after the Hebrew name of Berel Katznelson, the popular leader of the Labor Unity party and founder of the newspaper ‘Davar’ who died about two years earlier. The founders of the kibbutz were the core of the training of the working and learning youth who came from Ma’oz Haim and the core of the Scouts B. When the nucleus of the Nahal, made up of Iraqi immigrants, including Ya’akov Tzemach, arrived in Bari, he was already a neighbor in his new location, after the original point – which was established in the Nahbir sands near the current border with Gaza – was attacked and severely damaged in the War of Independence. In the kibbutz, Ya’akov met Carmela, and together they started a family.
